Ibrahim Maalouf’s “Beirut”
by Joey Ayoub
I stumbled upon this beautiful music video entitled “Beirut” which features scenes of Maalouf walking in Beirut.
Winner of the Instrumental Revelation of the Year Victory Prize (Frank Ténot prize) at the “Victoires du Jazz” competition, Ibrahim Maalouf comes from the very distinguished Maalouf family; he is the nephew of author Amin Maalouf, son of trumpeter Nassim Maalouf, and grandson of journalist, poet and musicologist Rushdi Maalouf.
According to his Wikipedia page, at the age of 9 he accompanied his father in a duo throughout Europe and the Middle East, playing a baroque repertoire by Antonio Vivaldi, Henry Purcell and Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni among others. He is noted for playing Arabic music with quarter tones on the trumpet pioneered by his father in the 1960s.
The song is featured on his third album, “Diagnostic” (2011)
