I wish I can explain what it feels like to be disgusted by one’s own country. It’s a painful sentiment. You feel guilty for even feeling it in the first place, but you just can’t help it. You’re aware of your own privileges, it’s true, and you know that despite it all, you still have a relatively comfortable life. But that’s just not enough anymore.

There’s clearly something wrong with Lebanon, and we all know that we’re part of it. I’m not just talking about the many problems that we face today. I’m talking about something truly fundamental regarding this country’s way of perceiving itself.

We’ve been somehow conditioned to an odd mixture of institutionalized apathy and institutionalized helplessness. We’ve stopped dreaming beyond the few meters of exclusive space that we’ve built around us, because we do not see a country that is receptive to its own issues. We are engulfed in our own sectarian lunacy exacerbated by our own (suffocating) corrupted religio-political class, and we never fail to remind ourselves how we’re failing to do anything about it.

This is how we’ve been conditioned, and this is the only way we know how to function. Somehow, along the way, we have separated our own individual day-to-day concerns from that of the Other’s even when they are, more often than not, identical.

I’ve been fortunate enough to experience a Lebanon that isn’t tainted by such helplessness. I’ve experienced political happiness, a term broadly defined by the anthropologist David Graeber as making sense of a situation through a realization of common purpose, a sense that you trust the people around you because you’re all dedicated to solving a problem.

More recently, I experienced it with طلعت ريحتكم (‘tol3et re7etkom’, or ‘You Stink’), a grassroots movement created as a response to the government’s inability to solve the trash crisis. We are dedicated to “sustainable solutions provided by several environmental experts and centered around going back to a municipality-level system while implementing nationwide recycling.”

A few days ago, I met with the core organizing team of tol3et re7etkom. We were from different age groups, mostly young men and women, and from several sectarian backgrounds. Most of us were quite experienced at this whole trying to change the country thing, but some were quite new. We were from different political backgrounds, but we intuitively understood that this cause required everyone.

So we started talking and talking, and in the end we got to a simple conclusion: the situation is pretty straightforward. We know what the cause of the problem is, we know how to solve it and we know what would happen if we fail to do so.

Let me explain: the ongoing trash crisis has, once again, exposed the loosely organized gang of warlords-turned-politicians that we call our government as essentially useless. They have been incapable of dealing with a relatively simple crisis which they’ve had years to prepare for. They never took any initiative, for reasons we all know, and have been doing what they do best: postpone the problem until a catastrophe hits the country.

But we’re not waiting, and we need you to join us.

This Saturday the 8th of August at 6 pm (event) on Martyrs’ Square (ساحة الشهداء). We want to bring everyone: municipality employees, schoolchildren and students; working-class, middle-class and the super rich; teachers, writers, artists and dancers; lawyers, bankers, corporate executives and farmers. Everyone. Get your teta and your jeddo, mom and dad, sister and brother and cousin and aunt and uncle. Everyone. Tell your friends from Jbeil and Tripoli and Akkar and Zahleh and Saida and Sour and Nabatiyyeh. We need them and we need to speak out loudly and clearly, together.

In the meantime, we’ve launched an IndieGogo campaign to raise funds for the upcoming protest as well as post-protest plans to make this country green again. Our movement is barely a week old and is already bearing its fruits. Not only have we managed to raise over $3,800 in less than 24 hours, but several municipalities have responded to our calls and began recycling themselves.

Our demands are as follow:

1. Immediate eco-friendly solution by the government, and reversing the damage that has been made, since they dumped garbage in reserves, wells, and near residential areas.
2. Implementation of ‘Bidding Terms’ by the government that are accepted by environmental experts, with the overall plan including sustainable solutions (no to burying, no to incineration, no to landfills in the sea).
3. Hold everyone who caused the crisis accountable, and open a transparent investigation about all the money that have been wasted and/or stolen.

I truly hope that you see in this movement what I do. I’m seeing people working relentlessly for something that they truly believe in. We know what we’re up against, but we also know that this has to happen. We have to keep the momentum going. We’re already seeing actual change being made on the ground.

بتمنى لو كانت قادر أشرح هذا الشعور المؤسف لما بتقرف من وطنك. شعورٌ مؤلم بالتأكيد، لأنو الإحساس بالذنب بيضربك لمجرد التفكير بهي الطريقة، بس الموضوع خارج إرادتنا. أكيد بفكر بالرفاهيات والكماليات اللي عندي وكمان بفكر أديش عيشتي أحسن وأريح من عيشة كتير ناس غيري، بس للأسف هالأشيا ما عادت تكفي

صار واضح أنو في شي كتير غلط بلبنان، وواضح كمان أنو نحنا جزء لا يتجزأ منو. كلامي مش بس عن كمية المشاكل الكتيرة اللي عايشينها اليوم ومنحكي فيها كل يوم، أنا عم إحكي عن شي أساسي مش مزبوط بجوهر إدراك هالبلد لذاتها وتصورها عن نفسها

نحنا تكيفنا، بطريقة ما، مع مزيج غريب من اللامبالاة والعجز المؤسساتي. بطلنا نحلم ونتطلع أبعد من أنوفنا وخارج الأسوار اللي بنيناها حولينا لنحمي المكان الخاص فينا وبس، يمكن لأننا ما عم  نشوف حولينا بلد عم يدرك مشاكلو ويتقبلها. نحنا غايصين حتى النخاع بالجنون الطائفي تبعنا اللي عم تفاقمو طبقتنا الاجتماعية الدين-سياسّية الفاسدة والمحتضرة. ومع إننا دايماً قادرين نتذكر هالحقيقة بس دايماً عاجزين نعمل أي شي لتغييرها

هيك تكيفنا، وهي صارت الطريقة الوحيدة اللي منعرفها لتمشي الأمور. بس نحنا وبطريقنا لهالتكيف، وبطريقة ما، فصلنا مشاكلنا الحياتية  اليومية عن مشاكل غيرنا تماماً، والغريب أنو مشاكل غيرنا بأغلب الأحيان مطابقة تماماً لمشاكلنا

يمكن أنا كنت محظوظ لأني قدرت عيش لبنان مش ملوث بهالعجز الرهيب. قدرت عيش حالة من السعادة السياسية، وهو مصطلح شرحه بشكل موسع عالم الأنثروبولوجيا ديفيد غريبير اللي قال عنو أنو هو عقلنة موقف ما عبر التوصل إلى هدف موحد، يعني إنك تثق بالأشخاص اللي حواليك لأنكون جميعاً عندكون هدف واحد هو حل المشكلة

ومؤخراً اختبرت هالشي مرة تانية مع طلعت ريحتكم. طلعت ريحتكم هي حركة ناشئة تم تأسيسها كرد فعل لعجز الحكومة عن حل أزمة الزبالة. الحركة بتهدف إلى “البحث عن حلول مستدامة يقترحها عدد من الخبراء البيئيين وتكون مركزة حول العودة إلى نظام على مستوى البلديات للتخلص من القمامة في حين يتم تطبيق نظام إعادة تدوير على نطاق البلد بأكمله”

من يومين اجتمعت مع الفريق المركزي لطلعت ريحتكم. كنا كلنا ناس من أعمار مختلفة بس بالغالب شباب وصبايا صغار من مختلف الفئات الدينية والطائفية. معظمنا كان عنا خبرة بموضوع أنو “بدنا نحاول نغير البلد”، بس كمان كان في ناس جداد عهالتجربة. كنا كمان من خلفيات سياسية مختلفة ومع هيك كلنا كنا فهمانين، بطريقة تلقائية، أنو هي المشكلة بدها الكل يشتغل

حكينا وحكينا وآخر شي وصلنا لاستنتاج بسيط: الموضوع واضح. نحنا منعرف سبب المشكلة ومنعرف كيف نحلها وكمان منعرف شو رح يصير إذا ما حليناها

خليني أشرحلكون شوي: أزمة الزبالة اللي نحنا عايشينها بتكشف عن جديد هالعصابة المهلهلة من تجار الحروب اللي صارو بعدين سياسيين واللي منسميهون الحكومة واللي هي عملياً عديمة الفائدة. هدول أثبتو عجزهون عن التعامل مع مشكلة بسيطة نسبياً صرلها سنين عم تتراكم وبالتالي كان عندهون الوقت الكافي ليحلوها. بس هنن ما عملو أي مبادرة بهالخصوص لأسباب كلنا منعرفها، بل على العكس كانو عم يتصرفو بالطريقة اللي هنن كتير شاطرين فيها: منأجل النظر بالمشكلة ومننتظر لتضرب الأزمة البلد

بس نحنا ما رح ننتظر متلهون، رح نتصرف وبدنا ياك تساعدنا

يوم السبت الجاية 8 آب الساعة 6 المسا بساحة الشهدا. بدنا الكل يجي: عمال البلدية، ولاد المدارس، والطلاب، الطبقة العاملة، الطبقة المتوسطة، والأغنياء، المعلمين، الكتاب، الفنانين والراقصين، المحامين، موظفين البنوكة، موظفين الشركات، والفلاحين. الكل. جيب معك التيتة والجدو، الماما والبابا، أختك وخيك، ابن عمك وعمتك وعمك.. الكل.. خبر أصحابك من جبيل وطرابلس لعكار ومن زحلة وصيدا لصور والنبطية. نحنا بحاجة الكل وبحاجة أنو نحكي بصوت عالي وبصوت واحد

ومن هون لوقتها بلشنا هيدي الحملة لحتى نلم تبرعات كرمال مظاهرتنا الجاية وكمان لندعم مشاريعنا بعد المظاهرة واللي بتهدف أنو نرجع لبنان أخضر من جديد. ومع أنو حركتنا جديدة عمرها يا دوب أسبوع بس بلشنا نشوف نتائج من هلأ: مو بس قدرنا نلم 3800 دولار بأقل من 24 ساعة، كمان في كتير بلديات استجابت لنداءنا وبلشت بنفسها إعادة تدوير الزبالة

مطالبنا هيه

1. حل بيئي مناسب وفوري بتقدمو الحكومة، والعمل على عكس الضرر اللي حصل بعد كل شي عملتو من كب الزبالة بالمحميات والآبار وجنب المناطق السكنية
2. اعتماد الحكومة ل “شروط للمناقصات” تكون مصادق عليها من قبل خبراء بيئيين ويكون هدفها العام هو الحلول المستدامة (لا لدفن النفايات، لا لحرق النفايات، لا لطمر النفايات في البحر)
3. تقديم كل مين كان مسؤول عن هالأزمة للمحاسبة وفتح تحقيق بيتمتع بالشفافية حول كل هالمصاري اللي تم تبذيرها أو سرقتها

بتمنى من كل قلبي أنو تشوفو بهالحركة الشي اللي أنا شايفو. أنا شايف ناس عم تشتغل بدون كلل أو ملل ليوصلو لهدف هنن مآمنين فيه. نحنا منعرف حجم الشي اللي عم نواجهو، بس منعرف كمان أنو هالمواجهة لازم تصير. لازم نحافظ على هالزخم اللي نحنا واصلينلو. لسه بعدنا مبلشين وبلشنا نشوف نتائج فعلية عالأرض
