“Attention! Turkish democracy needs you!

After a series of peaceful demonstrations for preserving a recreational area in Istanbul city centre, which is planned to be demolished for the construction of a shopping mall, Turkish police attacked the protesters violently with tear gas and water cannon, directly targeting their faces and bodies. Dozens of protesters are hospitalized and access to the park is blocked without any legal basis. Turkish media, directly controlled by the government or have business and political ties with it, refuse to cover the incidents. Press agencies also blocked the information flow.
Please share this message for the world to become aware of the police state created by AKP of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which is often considered to be a model for other Middle Eastern countries. Turkish democracy expects your help. Thank you!”

I have received this message

Friends–sorry to bother you with politics, but I am in Turkey after all and its part of the air you breathe here.  Our internet may be cut soon–so just wanted to get the word out as publicity is the only weapon we have at the moment. Protests everywhere–mostly peaceful. Police attacking them with gas, tanks, and plastic bullets. Turkish news is censored–over 20,000 people in Taksim, 4 dead, 400 injured, hospitals overflowing and CNN Turkey talks about best way to attract butterflies. We went down last night and saw old ladies marching, children marching–police attacking all of them with billy clubs and ‘orange gas’. Protests in our street till 4AM and continued at dawn. (Took an hour break?)  Take a look at my facebook page or twitter account for more information and just tell somebody! We are okay, don’t worry. Our neighborhood is quiet now and police violence seems concentrated far away from us so…so no worries on our part.  Thanks for listening.  https://www.facebook.com/jeff.gibbs.395?hc_location=stream”

“Some notes and reflections on what has so far transpired during #occupygezi as we enter the 6th day:”

What is happening in Istanbul? a blogger answers

“Four days ago a group of people who did not belong to any specific organization or ideology got together in Istanbul’s Gezi Park. Among them there were many of my friends and students.  Their reason was simple: To prevent and protest the upcoming demolishing of the park for the sake of building yet another shopping mall at very center of the city. There are numerous shopping malls in Istanbul, at least one in every neighborhood! The tearing down of the trees was supposed to begin early Thursday morning. People went to the park with their blankets, books and children. They put their tents down and spent the night under the trees.  Early in the morning when the bulldozers started to pull the hundred-year-old trees out of the ground, they stood up against them to stop the operation.”
