I feel it my responsibility, as a resident of the Maameltein area for more than 18 years, to shed even further light on the recent sex trafficking ring bust that allowed the freeing of more than 75 Syrian women who were held against their will.

The residents of Maameltein, and more generally Jounieh, the Lebanese ISF and the Jounieh municipality are all complicit in perpetuating the commercial sexual exploitation of Eastern European/Russian, Syrian, Palestinian and Egyptian women by local groupings of criminals. In this city, we are taught from a very young age to ridicule, denigrate and dehumanise sex workers who walk the streets of Maameltein the minute it gets dark; we grow accustomed to the sight of long queues filled with men of all ranges formed outside “super night clubs” (in case you don’t know, it’s an umbrella term for “strip club”) ; we are encourage to finger-point sex workers at supermarkets and clothing stores – mainly by learning to recognise their outfits and hair colour – and paradoxically told to avoid looking at their morose faces; we are also forced to memorise the apartment complexes around us that are solely inhabited by sex workers – mainly to avoid playing football or learning how to ride a bike on their parking lots.

As soon as we reach puberty, we are taught by our heterosexual male peers in Catholic school to stop perceiving sex workers as social pariahs and start exploiting their bodies to attain manhood status. Our peers – by handing down advice gracefully given to them by older generations – will then resort to a classification of sex workers according to their nationality – Eastern European/Russian sex workers being the “most expensive” and Syrian sex workers being the “cheapest”. Illegal establishments such as “Chez Maurice” therefore become the lieu in which most Catholic schoolboys come to lose their virginity at age 14 to 16. Not only do we witness the inhumane practices being carried inside these brothels, but we are put in direct physical contact with the tortured – often drugged – sex workers we claimed we had no idea existed when the scandal erupted. Instead of decrying the sexual slavery enforced on those individuals, we choose to openly brag about our sexual experiences on the playground. Some complain about the nauseating hygiene of the sex worker they were “assigned”; others, the “lucky ones”, share pictures they discreetly took of the “total babes” they paid to be with. Most of us don’t even feel the need to hide our “adventure” from our parents; a considerable chunk of our patriarchs go to brothels themselves – and quite regularly.

The main purpose of this message is to counter the dominant narrative being circulated by Lebanese media:

– Sex tourists from the Gulf region should not be entirely blamed for the financial sustenance of these brothels.
– The Jounieh municipality should not be exempted of legal accountability; it has been conscientiously aware of the locality of these brothels and the barbaric practices being enforced inside of them.
– The Lebanese ISF shouldn’t be considered heroic; they are notable clients of these brothels. Maameltein residents know too well the inevitability of spotting police officers and soldiers going in and out of these brothels; often in plain sight, their pants unzipped.

As for Jounieh, particularly Maameltein, residents, even those of us who have never actively engaged with a sex worker: we need to realise that our all-around indifference towards the sexual trafficking of women that’s been going on in front of our very eyes, the one we came to hail as beneficial to our local “economy”, has contributed in extending the sexual enslavement of these women for years.

Let’s not kid ourselves. We all know there are more than 75 women being forced into sexual slavery. “Chez Maurice” and “Silver” have been shut down, but establishments such as “Amsterdam”, “Champs Elysées de Paris” and “Cobra” continue to operate to this day. Apartment complexes around us are still filled with imprisoned sex workers. Cut the theatrics.

عاملات الجنس وتواطؤنا الأبوي

‫أشعر أنه من واجبي، كمقيم في منطقة “المعاملتين” لأكثر من 18 عاما، أن ألقي المزيد من الضوء على القضية التي أثيرت مؤخرا حول العملية التي أدت إلى تحرير 75 امرأة سورية من شبكة الاتجار الجنسية واللواتي كن محتجزات قسريا. ‬

‫كل من سكان المعاملتين وجونيه بشكل عام، وقوى الأمن الداخلي اللبناني وبلدية جونيه متواطئين في تكريس الاستغلال الجنسي التجاري للنساء من شرق أوروبا والفلسطينيات والسوريات والمصريات وغيرهن، من قبل شبكات إجرام محلية.‬

‫نتعلم في سن مبكر في هذه المدينة، كيف نسخر ونحتقر ونمتهن انسانية عاملات الجنس اللواتي يسرن في شوارع “المعاملتين” حالما يحل الليل. نكبر معتادين على رؤية طوابير طويلة من الرجال من جميع الشرائح مصطفة خارج الـ”الأندية الليلية” (مصطلح يطلق على أندية التعري). منذ صغرنا يتم تشجيعنا على الإشارة بالإصبع إلى عاملات الجنس في السوبر ماركت ومحلات الألبسة- فنتعلم كيف نتعرف عليهن من خلال ملابسهن ولون شعرهن- وعلى تجنّب النظر مباشرة في وجوههن المكتئبة. منذ صغرنا نتعلم أن نتجنب لعب كرة القدم أو تعلم ركوب الدراجة قرب الأبنية المخصصة لسكنهن ومرآب السيارات الخاصة بهن.  ‬

‫حالما نصل إلى سن البلوغ، يعلّمنا أقراننا من الذكور المغايرين في المدرسة الكاثوليكية كيف نتوقف عن النظر إلى فئة عاملات الجنس كفئة منبوذة اجتماعيا والبدء في استغلال أجسادهن من أجل اكتساب صفة الرجولة. ‬

‫يعمد أقراننا تاليا- بعد نقلهم النصائح التي تلقوها بكرم من الجيل الأكبر سنا- إلى تصنيف عاملات الجنس وفقا لجنسيتهن: الشرق أوروبيات والروسيات الأغلى سعرا، والسوريات، الأقل سعرا. تصبح المؤسسات غير القانونية كـ”شي موريس” الأماكن التي يلجأ إليها الأطفال الكاثوليكيين ليفقدوا عذريتهم في سن الـ 14 والـ16 سنة. ‬

‫نحن لا نشاهد الممارسات غير الإنسانية التي تمارس داخل بيوت الدعارة ضد النساء فحسب، ولكن أيضا يتم وضعنا على تماس مباشر مع عاملات الجنس اللواتي يتم تعذيبهن، بينما زعمنا أننا “لم نكن نعلم” عند اندلاع الفضيحة المدويّة. ‬

‫بدلا من رفض استعباد عاملات الجنس، نختار أن نتبجح علنا في تجاربنا الجنسية على الحلبة. البعض يتذمر من “قلة نظافة” عاملة الجنس التي تم تعيينها له. آخرون، “المحظوظون”، يتداولون صورا التقطوها سرا لـ “فاتنات” دفعن مقابل التواجد معهن. معظمنا لا يرى طائلا من إخفاء “مغامراته” عن أهله. فمعظم آبائنا يذهبون بانتظام الى بيوت الدعارة.  ‬

‫الغرض الرئيسي من رسالتي هذه، هو مواجهة الرواية السائدة التي يجري تداولها من قبل وسائل الإعلام اللبنانية:‬

‫- بعكس النظرة السائدة، لا تتحمل السياحة الجنسية من الخليح العربي مسؤولية الاستمرار المادي لبيوت الدعارة هذه. ‬

‫- يجب عدم إعفاء بلدية جونيه من المساءلة القانونية؛ فقد كانت على علم بالممارسات الوحشية ضد النساء المحتجزات قسريا للاستغلال الجنسي. ‬

‫- لا يجب اعتبار ما قامت به قوى الأمن الداخلي بطوليا. فالقوى الأمنية رواد اعتياديون لبيوت الدعارة. فسكان “المعاملتين” يعرفون حتمية الالتقاء بضباط وعناصر قوى الأمن في هذه البيوت، في كثير من الأحيان يدخلون ويخرجون على مرأى من الجميع فيما سراويلهم محلولة. ‬

‫أما بالنسبة لسكان جونيه، لا سيما المعاملتين، حتى أولئك منا الذين لم يسبق لهم القيام بنشاط مع عاملة جنس، علينا أن ندرك أن لامبالاتنا تجاه الاتجار بالنساء، الذي كان ولا يزال يحدث أمام أعيننا، هو ما ساهم في توسيع استعباد النساء جنسيا. ‬

‫دعونا لا نخدع أنفسنا. نحن نعرف جميعا أن هناك أكثر من 75 امرأة يتم استعبادهن. تم إقفال “شي موريس” و”سيلفر” ولكن المؤسسات مثل “أمستردام”، “الشانزليزيه في باريس” و”كوبرا” تستمر في العمل حتى يومنا هذا. ولا تزال تملأ المجمعات السكنية من حولنا نساء مستعبدات جنسيا، محتجزات ويجبرن دون إرادتهن على ممارسة الجنس. فلنوقف هذه المسرحية.‬
